Hi there, my name is Chelsea Roy. I was born in East Haddam, Connecticut and currently live in Charlestown, RI with by boyfriend Billy. Right now, we have a fishtank and a snake but hope to get a dog someday soon. I moved to Rhode Island in 2012 to start a master's degree in Biological and Environmental Science with a concentration in Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems. For that degree, I have the opportunity to raise and study yellowfin tuna. These incredible creatures have really high larval mortality rates, so the research I take part in studies spawning conditions and how to increase the viability of egg-stage and larval tuna. As all tuna species are highly overfished, I am happy to be a part of research that would reduce the number of fish humans pull out of the ocean every year. Two years into that program, I realized I much prefer the human side of science than I do working in the laboratory by myself. I enjoy teaching undergrads and younger students about science. At the same time I had that realization, I was doing a lot of babysitting outside of school and figured out that I was missing regular interaction with young people. There is a sincere curiosity and enthusiasm that children have that I really enjoy, which is why I have chosen to pursue a Masters of Arts in Education and Teacher Certification in order to make my life's work teaching. I hope to finish both degrees and graduate in May of 2016. Outside of URI, I can be found substitute teaching in a few local districts, throwing pottery, scuba diving at Fort Wetherill, or fishing on my dad's boat with my family. As much as I love science, I also love the outdoors and doing anything creative.

Teaching Philosophy

Ecology Unit Plan- http://www.evernote.com/l/AAURxsKeYxtB27b9BHjGVhdvwb5rwsDAhEE/
This unit is the final unit of the year for a high school biology course. Overall, the unit examines ecosystems as a whole including the general types of ecosystems that exist as well as ecosystem components. The unit also covers how ecosystems are created, and the specific types of relationships and interactions that occur within ecosystems. Because all parts of an ecosystem are interconnected, cause and effect is the driving theme for this unit.
First, students develop a basic understanding of what an ecosystem is as well as what composes an ecosystem. Then, they explore different types of ecological relationships and the ways in which organisms interact with each other and their surroundings. Next, they learn about succession and natural disruptions in ecosystems. After this, students will learn about energy and matter cycling in ecosystems as well as photosynthesis and cellular respiration. Then, students will learn about group behavior. Finally, students will further investigate cause and effect in ecosystems by considering anthropogenic effects on ecosystems.
Ecology is an interdisciplinary science and this is reflected in the unit. Many lessons examine several types of science to show students this interdisciplinary nature of ecology. Additionally, students work on one lesson in both science and english. Technology is also incorporated into this unit through the use of Google Chromebooks to do online research, webquests, information synthesis, and collaboration with other students. The unit will end with a summative, constructed response test that reflects the ways in which students were required to think throughout the entire unit. The way that students think about ecosystems and the cause and effect relationships within those ecosystems is more highly valued than vocabulary memorization.
